Interesting analysis. I agree - Hormuz has proven to be America’s and the GCC’s center of gravity and Iran seems unlikely to give that up without serious and politically risky concessions by Trump. I guess electing an incompetent reality TV personality (who also happens to be a serial rapist and pedophile) to be our commander in chief wasn’t such a smart move after all.
I do think; however, that Iran’s smartest move would be to build 5-10 nuclear devices. Given the unhinged sociopaths who rule America and Israel, that seems like the surest path to ensuring its safety and making sure they never attack it again.
Ms. Labott, let's not confuse a deal with victory. If Trump had articulated his goals at the outset, he would not need an offramp now. But now he must finish the job or he will be perceived as the Loooser. Now that things have started only Ms.Pletka's requirements for victory apply:
No nukes.
No missles.
No proxies.
No killing Iranians.
And let me add one. No Hormiz gatekeeper. The potential for a great victory was there. That is slipping away moment by moment. Take care.
I don’t understand what we should be looking for as signs of consequence or progress, and what to expect long term. Iran feels like an unending murk-fest.
This is excellent. Another point is that now more than ever Iran must have at least a nuclear threat. The elephant never mentioned, though occasionally s/o on the Iran side does, is that Israel HAS been allowed the nuclear threat. That is why Iran needs it. Look at Sparta Israel now.
Negotiations have been one-sided- from everyone else's point of view but the Iranians. We have been hell bent on changing the regime as well. That puts them on the defensive, even the offensive. It's existential for them. Not us (according to Trump).
Add the Palestinians to this.
A bigger deal needs to happen than Trump Inc, in a hurry, is capable of, it seems to me-- nor are they smart enough or willing or able to make. Iran is a player.. and will be. Iran, for change needs to happen from within. Trump, playing the "gantse macher" is a fraud... and exposing himself as he is caught in his own web.
Why is the only thing you mention nuclear capability? The ballistic rockets and the support of the terror proxies throughout the Middle East are completely irrelevant? R E A L L Y??
