Thank you Elise. Putin's war on Ukraine certainly changed things. The talk was of ending NATO when in fact the war in Ukraine and now Trump's support of Putin made NATO more necessary increasing it's members. Trump thinks he has more power than he does just as he decreases it in contradiction.
The US has benefited tremendously in the past from its primacy in NATO, in prestige and reputation as well as militarily..i.e. the Military Industrial Complex..Prestige and reputation no more a given with Trump. Maybe vestiges. The change should be welcome all around..even if inadvertently brought on by Trump.. As he loses power, and to keep show of force going, he still tries to brandish it though. But for how long?
“Military pensions count toward many countries’ defense totals.” - Especially the U.S. who has some of the largest medical and pension allocations counted toward their spending.
I’m getting tired of the American POV that because the US seemingly is less committed to NATO that therefore the entire institution is dead, or will be soon. Everyone else in NATO recognizes its utility and importance. America will do as Trump wants. NATO will reevaluate and reemerge as an organization for the 21st century. And America will be left behind.
