Excellent analysis of the trust deficit accumulating beneath the surface. The point about allies accelerating trade deals with other partners isnt just hedging, its a fundamental realignment of strategic assumptions. I saw similar patterns in corporate partnerships where one dramatic breach usually mattered less than the uncertainty it created about future behavior.
Trump is a pathetic character. And he is so out of touch, he is unaware, advertising it, to an enlightened audience abroad but with still enough support here in the Congress to keep him in power. This is a shame on us for keeping him twice and this long with his increasing horrors.
What Trump and his myrmidons are doing across all fronts is destroying for the sake of destroying, destroying the ground we stand on here and shaking the ground internationally.
Trump will insist he won Greenland. A certain number will believe him.
This is on us. It took awhile, decades to come to this place. It took all this from Trump and this threat to Greenland for the Euros to get a sense of what they must do. We need their help in fact. Gavin Newsom was right in his lecture to the Euros. Marc Carney of Canada gives us hope.
Meanwhile Trump and his people are a shame and a disaster visited upon us, very painful every minute he and his administration are still in power.
The folks in Minneapolis give me hope. There we all go-- us here in another space maybe soon to come. No way.
I did read Danielle Pletka's from 1/19/26 . I cannot comment there. She does not seem to get how profoundly unfit Trump is mentally and how much he is just surfing going nowhere while the discord he is sows here and abroad is making it's own reality. Euros are or are going to find their voice as a unity and as Carney proposes, probably already happening. Yes Trump has some good basic instincts but also some very bad ones and most of all is is not dependable and neither are we. Nor will we be for a long time. This takedown may be good for us. What with the wide swings we have now in governance, no one will depend on us, even business interests.
You know what this is just my opinion. But this reminded me of that moment when Biden had President Obama walk him off the stage. I saw a man that looked like he needed some help with things. And this isn’t political. But he really looks like some things are off. And I’m just saying I noticed that with Biden. And I’m noticing it with Trump.
Good analysis, but if our current/former allies are now forced to step up their own defense capabilities instead of relying on us, that’s not so bad.
Totally agree Janice, but I think it’s also important for the US to be reliable. Our allies should be able to count on the commitments we make.

I did not keep a copy of my comment. But I did like what you wrote. I will read that again and try to remember.
