Rubio may also be looking ahead 3 years. Vance, the currently annointed Republican candidate for the presidency after Trump, has now created juicy quotes that opponents can use against him in the future. It's surprising that Vance seems so oblivious of these time bombs. But opponents to Rubio can also have a field day comparing Rubio positions pre and post his appointment by Trump. But of course, much depends on opponents being able to mobilize strategy - not a Democratic strength in past campaigns.
Ms. Labott, the scene you describe is a dire one for those of us who cherish the liberty and freedom that once was the "West." Where do we turn? The Europe emerging from the exploitation of immigration policies is redefining western Europe into something indistinguishable from the values we once shared. Our only hope is that MAGA is a flash in the pan.
But one thing is certain. Welcome to those fleeing the tyranny of the East. Don't bring it to America! Defending American freedom is not tyranny. Take care.
Thank you for your clear assessment of the present dissociation between Trump’s administration and the EU.
1) if it’s true that EU countries have been traveling on the tailcoat of US umbrella and not paying their fair share of their defense, the transactional approach of the GOP is skewing international relations in a very dangerous way.
2) the lessons of the 19th century balance of power (Disraeli’s « Britain has no friends, only interests », or Bismarck’s careful foreign relations balance) culminated in WWW I. Unless there remains a modicum of international rule of law and shared values, there can’t be any peace nor stability in foreign relations.
3) The way Trump betrays America’s allies (his refusal to accept the use of NATO’s Article 5 in case of an attack on a member), or even to honor the Congress decisions to help Ukraine in order to resume juicy deals with Putin, is intolerable.
4) The attacks against immigration (without which aging US economy will decline), blatant disregard for the Constitution, raging corruption at all levels of the government, and ethnic cleansing are not going to be a model for the future of democracy. Trump’s (and his oligarchs enablers) dream of a vertical authoritarian regime on the model of Putin or Xi Jinping should make any decent American run for cover (or better make Article 2 Section 4 of the Constitution active right now).
5) Trumpists forget that the US is a NATION OF MIGRANTS : only the « natives » are Americans…
Great job speaking out on it.
